Participants receive assignment cards designating which courts they play on and who their partners are for each round. If 24 players participate each player sits out (has a bye) for one round, an opportunity to observe others play. If fewer players participate, those who have a bye fill in during their bye round. One can of tennis balls is supplied for each court with an extra can or other gift for the prize.

For the first round only, players have a 5-minute warm-up and two practice serves. Players spin for serve at the beginning of each round and change sides after games 1 and 3. Partners each receive one point for each game they win, a maximum of 4 points per player per round. They record their points on their assignment cards at the end of each round. Each player receives an automatic 2 points for their bye round. When there are less than 24 players bye players who substitute they still receive the 2 points for that round. The player with the most points at the end of the event receives a prize.

To ensure that the event stays on schedule no-ad scoring is used and the coordinator or organizer blows a whistle or otherwise signals when a round is over and directs players to go to their next court and partner. Because of the first round warm-up period, succeeding rounds may be shortened by a few minutes.
